How to Keep Your Fresh Flowers Alive for Longer

How to Keep Your Fresh Flowers Alive for Longer

You’ve got your beautiful bouquet home. What do I do now?

Let me tell you! Despite looking very fragile - flowers are very easy to care for, here are some top tips for ensuring a long life for your flowers.

  1. Start clean.
Wash your vase with hot soapy water. Start clean!

  2. Trim the stems.
Cut about 2 cm off at a 45° angle before placing in water. Use sharp scissors or secateurs. Why 45° angle? Well, the 45° angle increases the surface area for the flower to drink from, more water = happier flower.

  3. Use ambient water.
Most flowers prefer room temperature. However there are a few exceptions to this rule...this includes sunflowers and hydrangeas - they like hot water (think kettle hot!)

  4. Remove lower leaves.
No foliage should sit below the waterline. Firstly, it doesn't look good. But it also breaks down, clouds the water and produces more bacteria.

  5. Change the water often.
Every second day is ideal. Trim stems again at the same time.

  6. Avoid direct sun and fruit bowls.
Ethylene gas from fruit makes flowers age faster. So keep your flowers away from your apples, bananas and avocados! Also keep your flowers out of direct sunlight and away from drafts.

  7. Add a flower food sachet.
Or mix your own: 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 teaspoon vinegar. Or ask us for some flower food when you buy your flowers.

  8. Mix and Match.
Each flower has its own lifespan, some outliving others, don't be afraid to pull out flowers which are tired looking, and rearrange to keep that bouquet going.

Do this, and your flowers will easily last a week - often longer.
